Basic Internet Terminology 


Basic Internet Terminology : The various terms used in the Internet domain are as follows

1.Web pages :- Electronic documents or files written in hypertext markup language [HTML] containing information and to the resources available across the Internet, enabling the user to navigate across several web pages by clicking on those links.



2. Website:- A collection of related web pages uploaded single site on the web which is owned and perio duple by a particularly  individual or organization .

3. Home page:- The starting page of a website containg basic information of the website organization that one the website and links to all the information present on it .

4. Blogs:-  Information that is instantely  published on the website this is achieved by a technology called blog scrcption that enables a user (blogger) to post information on the website in a predefined template .for example :- https://technology369kk.blogspot.com/

5. Browser :- Browser a computer program that enables by the user to access the web pages retrieve display and send required information across the internet.

There are two types of web browser :- Text and Non-graphical browsers.

a).Text:- In this browsers provide access to the web in text only mode they enable the user to read plain text.


b). Non graphical:- These browser provide sound videos, audio on the internet, then take up and down arrow keys are used fore navigation.

6. Protocol :- A defined set of rules for transmitting information across the network.


7.Client :- A software program used to send requests across the internet for particular service through an interactive interface [differs with different client software ]

8. Server:- A software program that uses the client /server model to service the requests from the clients   and send them the requested files in the form of  web pages. Each website has a web server program associated with. 


9. Hypertext markup language (HTML) : A coding language for producing hypertext documents or web page on the Internet. It contains a set of defined elements and tags using which the text and image contained in the web page are displayed in particular style.


10. Hyperlink  the links to images text or other multimedia embedded on a web page, which when clicked, take the user to another web page where the desired image, text, etc. is displayed . 


11. IP Address: The addressing scheme which numerically identifies an entity (or computer) on the internet. Earlier IPv4 was used which contained addresses in 32- bit format; nowadays, IPv6 is used which contains addresses in 128- bit format.

12. Uniform resource locator (URL): The unique global address of a web page that identifies its location on the world wide web. It is used to retrieve documents or other resources from a particular location. The syntax of The URL is as follows:

<protocol><domain (or server ) name><domain type><path><file name><file extension>
For example, http://WWW.chemguide.co.uk/inorgenic/transition/features.html

13. Bookmark: Out of the various websites/webpages visited during a session ,some desired ones can be set as bookmarks or favorites. This feature helps the user to revisit the same website/webpage in the next session by a single click rather than typing the web address all over again. For example, Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer provide this feature.


14. Bandwidth: The amount of data that can be carried from a point to another in a given  period of time (of data) per second (bps).






15. Instant messaging (IM): A computer conference set up between two or more computers across the network to instantly exchange information usually in text from so this is very popular today in the world. how many application so the image :- 



16. Modulator/demodulator (Modem): A device that converts the digital signals of the computer into analog and providing access to the internet it called modem. 

There are two types of modem:-
A. Internal modem :- Which is a card fitted to the mother board inside a computer, with a connection wire connecting the card to the external telephone socket. 

B. External modem :- External modem is a box with one terminal connected  to the computer, while the other is connected to the telephone socket.


17. Portal: A website serving as a gateway to the internet, containing collection of links to provide popular serves such as, e-mails, forums, search engines, online shopping, etc. 





18. Hub :- It is central connecting hardware device consisting of a large number of ports to connect the different  devices on the network so that they can communicate with one another. There are two types of hubs: active hub and passive hub. Active hub not only connects the different computers on the network, but also filters and amplifies the signal received from one computer before forwarding them to another computer on the network. passive hub directly transmits the signals it receives from one computer to another computer on the network.

19. Bridge: It is a "store -and -forward" hardware device that is used to connect multiple network segments. It allows a large network to be broken into two smaller networks, and in this way reduces the amount of traffic, and then forward the packets of data packets to the correct location by identifying the medium access control (MAC) address reachable from the specific port.



20.Switch: It is a small hardware device used to connect the individual devices on the network so that they can communicate with one another. It looks similar to the hub, but it stores, filters and forwards the data packets between ports based on the medium access control (MAC) packets are forwarded to all the nodes connected.



21. Routers: These are devices connected to two or more networks, which create or maintain a set of available route, and determine the best rout for passing data packets. The process of finding the path is called the routing and the routers use different algorithms to determine most efficient path for sending a packets to its target network. The information about the best route is stored in the table called routing table. A router creates and maintains this routing table.




22. Common Gateway Interface script (CGI): A specification designed to receive and return data between a web server and a CGI program. The script can use a variety of languages such as C, Perl, Java or Visual Basic, etc. 



23. Cookies: These are the information stored on a users computer that is related to URLs and web addresses created by a web server. The cookies are used by websites to keep track on the users visits and his/her browsing patterns.



24.  Domain name: A method of identifying the type of account possessed by the website owner. For example, educational institutes have  .edu as domain name; government organization have  .gov  domain name.as
